Endocrine surgery manages conditions impacting hormone-producing glands, addressing hormonal imbalances and metabolic issues that may require surgery.

Endocrine surgery involves the surgical management of conditions affecting the endocrine system, which consists of glands that produce hormones to regulate various bodily functions. Disorders of the endocrine glands can lead to hormonal imbalances, metabolic abnormalities, and other health issues that may require surgical intervention.

Thyroid Surgery

The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy production, and other bodily functions. Thyroid surgery may be necessary to treat a variety of thyroid conditions, including:

  • Thyroid Nodules: Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths or lumps within the thyroid gland that may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Surgical removal of thyroid nodules may be recommended for diagnostic purposes or to alleviate symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, breathing, or speaking.
  • Thyroid Cancer: Thyroid cancer is a relatively rare but treatable form of cancer that originates in the thyroid gland. Surgery is often the primary treatment for thyroid cancer and may involve removing part or all of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy) to remove cancerous tissue.

Parathyroid Surgery

The parathyroid glands are four small glands located behind the thyroid gland that regulate calcium levels in the body. Parathyroid surgery may be necessary to treat conditions such as:

  • Hyperparathyroidism: Hyperparathyroidism occurs when the parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone (PTH), leading to elevated calcium levels in the blood. Surgical removal of one or more abnormal parathyroid glands (parathyroidectomy) may be recommended to restore normal calcium levels and alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, bone pain, kidney stones, and osteoporosis.

Adrenal Gland Surgery

The adrenal glands are small glands located on top of each kidney that produce hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone, and adrenaline. Adrenal gland surgery may be necessary to treat conditions such as:

  • Adrenal Tumors: Adrenal tumors are abnormal growths or masses that develop in the adrenal glands and may be benign or malignant. Surgical removal of adrenal tumors may be indicated to prevent hormone overproduction (e.g., Cushing’s syndrome, Conn’s syndrome) or to treat adrenal cancer.
