What is General Surgery?
General Surgery, despite its misleading name, is a surgical specialty in its own right, that focuses on the abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum (or large intestine), liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts. It also deals with the surgical treatment of diseases involving the breasts, thyroid gland, salivary glands, skin and soft tissues, veins and arteries, and hernias. [link]
Some general surgeons may sub-specialize into one or more areas like colorectal surgery, breast surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, vascular surgery, laparoscopic surgery etc, but they are still registered as general surgeons under the Specialists Accreditation Board of Singapore’s Ministry of Health [ link]
